Stereo Card #23: The market (souk) in Jerusalem

Jerusalem

Jerusalem in 1900 was Palestine's largest city, with perhaps 50,000 inhabitants - a far cry from Roman times, when it may have had up to a million at times. Its population at the turn of the 19th century included every community, religion and sect, in roughly equal proportions. As cities go, even at that time it wasn't particularly large. But its cultural, historical and religious importance far outweighed its relatively small size..
