Village Life
In 1900 Palestine had several hundred long-established villages, and agriculture dominated the economy. Ruinous Ottoman taxation policies, coupled with the dry climate, kept the population for the most part desperately poor. But some particularly fertile areas did better, growing olives, grapes and vast quantities of citrus fruit, much of which was shipped to European markets.
